00:01:27 - Ace of Spades is unbeatable, apparently, but I never knew it was a song, such a good song.

00:01:33 - Writing it was just a word exercise on the game, all the cliches.

00:01:37 - I'm glad we became famous for that instead of a little turkey.

00:01:41 - But I sang the Ace of Spades for two years and no one noticed.

00:01:48 - They say that Ace of Spades is the hand of the dead man.

00:01:51 - Which was Wild Bill Hancock's hand when he was shot dead.

00:01:54 - He was an American sheriff who died during a game of poker, the hand consists of aces and aides, including the Ace of Spades.

00:02:02 - The album is not a desert, it was actually taken in a sandpit near Barnett, 10 miles northeast of London.

00:02:09 - Heavy Metal Classics

00:02:11 - You've adopted the Ace of Spades as your motif, why the Ace of Spades?

00:02:16 - Because it's bad luck.

00:02:18 - Ace of Spades is bad luck in it, see, so we figured if we use bad luck as our then it can't get any worse.

00:02:26 - Ace of Spades, I mean, how could anybody forget that?

00:02:28 - You know, even if they didn't like the song, it's just the title would, you know, it's just a good title, we thought.

00:02:33 - So then, once we'd all agreed on the title, we're thinking, hmm, well, how can we portray it, you know?

00:02:39 - I think I suggested it, like, why don't we try doing it in a, have this album sleeve, like, in sepia, sort of, brown and white, you know, and we can be gunfighters, you know, at the car table with the dead man's hand or whatever,

00:02:52 - And we thought about that and thought about how about just dressing up as cowboys, you know?

00:02:58 - And I remember really saying, oh, I want to be Clint Eastwood, I want to wear poncho.

00:03:02 - Phil had this thing about Marlon Brando and one-eyed Jax.

00:03:05 - I think Lemmy was, although he never admitted it, but I always thought he was dressed as

00:03:10 - Maverick.

00:03:11 - Our manager had been talking about, well, well, boys, it looks like you'll be going to America next year or whatever.

00:03:16 - Oh, really?

00:03:17 - Oh, great.

00:03:18 - Doug, our manager said, Doug, why don't you fly us out to the desert somewhere let's do the album shop. To do that we'll have to go to America, won't we?

00:03:25 - We'll have to find a desert, won't we?

00:03:27 - No, Phil. No, we won't actually because he knew somebody in High Wickham who lived near a sandstone quarry.

00:03:33 - This picture on the front of the A's and Spades album, it looked more like a Texas rock band than a UK rock band.

00:03:40 - This was actually photographed in a sandstone quarry in Barnett, just outside England, believe it or not.

00:03:46 - And that sky is real.

00:03:48 - The sky was actually airbrushed in, I believe, because it was just very grey and cloudy on that day.

00:03:53 - And of course, for evermore, everybody says, well, man, where did you do that?

00:03:57 - And of course, when you say barn it, and people fall about laughing.

00:04:02 - We couldn't go wrong that year.

00:04:04 - I think we were on every poll and every music paper.

00:04:07 - I only got beat to the sex idol tub by David Kiverdale.

00:04:13 - Sex idol, you know.

00:04:18 - If you like to gamble, I'll tell you how you're mad

00:04:30 - You win so blue, so mature, the same to me

00:04:34 - The pleasure is to play, maybe the devil's what you say

00:04:44 - The only God I need is the ace of spades, the ace of spades

00:04:54 - Playing for the high wall, catching up the devil

00:05:01 - Going with the flow, it's all against me

00:05:05 - Seven or eleven, snake-eyes watchin' you kill

00:05:15 - Double up or quit, doubles take a split

00:05:21 - The ace is fate, the ace is fate

00:05:25 - You know I'm going to lose, and gasoline swivels, but that's the way I like it, baby, I don't know why I'm living forever

00:05:44 - And don't forget the Joker

00:05:55 - Cause you love the anti, I know you've got to see me

00:06:16 - I see it in your eyes, take one look and die

00:06:31 - The only thing you see, you know it's gonna be The ace of spades, the ace of spades
