00:01:39 - Faith No More is an American alternative metal band formed in San Francisco, California, in 1979 under the name Faith No Man, composed of bassist Billy Gould, drummer Mike Borden, who were its founding members.

00:01:55 - The real thing is the third studio album by Faith No More, released in 1989.

00:02:01 - It was their first recording with Mike Patton as their singer, and it marked a turning point.

00:02:09 - On this album, Faith No More expands its musical range by combining funk, hip hop and Soul, with hardcore punk and heavy metal, and the epic song represents this reality.

00:02:22 - The band definitely thought the real thing was more radio-friendly or accessible, producer

00:02:27 - Matt Wallace said in 2019.

00:02:33 - What's important about this band is it helped ferment a new generation of metal fans who could move amorphously between everything from funk, soul and R&B to thrash and hardcore.

00:02:46 - Patton gave a glimpse of the song's meaning when he told Circus Magazine in 1990, it was about sexual frustration. Sex and lack of sex.

00:02:59 - Billy Gould explained in 1997, a lot of our songs start with the music first,

00:03:05 - The lyrics second, and it was called epic as a sort of code word before the words came along.

00:03:11 - Patton wrote the lyrics about a week after joining our band.

00:03:16 - It's nice to remember a 1990 MTV news report of the band.

00:03:21 - The San Francisco Bay Area band first began to explore the boundaries of metal back in 1986, with the rap-styled sound of their big college radio hit We Care A Lot.

00:03:29 - But the new LP is even bolder, incorporating funk, rap, thrash, blues and ballads, sometimes within the same song.

00:03:36 - The record is also one of them rave reviews from their peers, and they can count among their fans Death Lepper, Guns N' Roses, and fellow Bay Area band Metallica.

00:03:43 - Here's much more on Faith No More.

00:03:45 - They're a little different than your regular metal crowd or whatever you want to call it.

00:03:55 - No one really knows what they're about yet still.

00:03:57 - Which is cool.

00:03:58 - I mean we're good friends and we want to get them going too.

the Faith No More album, it's like, I mean, you know, my friends, when we hear it, you know, it's like we go, West made the best comment about it. I wrote this, I just forgot it, you know, and somehow they tuned it in and wrote it.

00:04:15 - Faith No More have been around for eight years now, but it wasn't until 1986 that the band gained national prominence with the anthemic metal rap We Care a Lot.

00:04:30 - Two years later, friction between vocalist Chuck Mosley and the rest of the band got to be too much, and Mosley was handed his walking papers.

00:04:36 - For the group's most recent LP, The Real Thing, 21-year-old Mike Patton was recruited to front the faith.

00:04:42 - We tried out about five other guys, just to see, you know, for comparison, and we picked them.

00:04:50 - In this hell, I've got to break it back

00:05:00 - First time I went and saw them, it wasn't really too into it

00:05:03 - My friends told me to go and then I thought they were pretty good

00:05:06 - And so I went and saw them again and they were great

00:05:09 - And I remember reading a magazine while they lost their singer, that's a bummer

00:05:13 - I used to like them, they're dead now

00:05:16 - When Patton joined the group he had to have some faith, he was presented with an album that was instrumentally complete and told to add lyrics and vocals to the group's finished tracks.

00:05:33 - That was easy.

00:05:34 - Just listen to the song over and over until you start hating it, and then the words come.

00:05:40 - We just made some tapes and gave them to him and said, here man, check it out.

00:05:43 - Go ahead.

00:05:44 - With the group's extreme style and unusual combination of influences, Faith No More has been winning fans steadily and gaining mainstream recognition too, including a Grammy nomination this year in the heavy metal category.

00:05:56 - How do they like all this newfound attention?

00:05:58 - That's nice.
