00:00:06 - Hello, I greet you again from Argentina.

00:00:29 - In this chapter I am going to introduce you to a song by the legendary band Deep Purple.

00:00:35 - From his album Strombringer, the song Soldier of Fortune, the band consisted of Richie Blackmore, guitar, David Coverdale, voice, Glenn Hughes, bass, voice, John the Lord, organ, keyboards,

00:00:54 - Ian Pace, drums, percussion.

00:01:02 - Richie Blackmore was never involved in the creation of this song and this album, as he was sentimentally in crisis, having separated from his partner.

00:01:12 - Consequently, the one who influenced the composition of the album was the bassist Glenn Hughes, who led the band to make songs with a soul and funk style.

00:01:24 - Soldier of Fortune as a melancholic song, with a great vocal performance by David Coverdale.

00:01:31 - Despite not being promoted, she got into the hearts of fans.

00:01:39 - Despite his disagreement with the album, Richie loved this song.

00:01:43 - In the Jerry Bloom biography, Black Knight, former lead guitarist Richie Blackmore, says,

00:01:49 - Soldier of Fortune, it is, one of my favorite songs.

00:01:54 - It's got a few of those mediaeval chords.

00:01:57 - David Coverdale tells us details of this masterpiece and its inclusion in the album of Whitesnake,

00:02:03 - The Purple Album.

00:02:04 - Yeah, yeah, it really resonates very much with me now and another testament to Richie

00:02:16 - Blackmore, the musical structure is identical to how we did I think on the original.

00:02:22 - I changed the key, you know, in deference to one's maturity.

00:02:27 - I wanted to be not an aggressive song to sing because it's such a melancholy reflection on your life and your life and anybody who sings that song will immediately feel memories of hopefully good times.

00:02:46 - But really, I said to Joel, go right ahead. All the acoustic guitars on the purple album are Joel's.

00:02:55 - He's a beautifully sensitive player and extremely accomplished and he basically took Richie's structure and just ran with it and added more guitars and stuff like a harpsichord, 12 string, which sounds like a harpsichord. It's a very renaissance style but I do remember Richie at the beginning

00:03:17 - Having a slight disappointment that I didn't write the lyric about a 13th century mercenary coming back from the wars in Holland, you know, and I went, oh man, you know, I'm sorry, but that's not my sphere of influence or, you know, my inspiration, but it's really interesting and I think it was that song when we presented it to the rest of the guys nobody bought it nobody thought it was purple or and Richie believed in it so much he asked me if when we were musical and studios in Munich if I'd make a demo and I'm not sure if he played the drums or we just put a tambourine on but then the band got it but I think it was another nail in the coffin that Richie was starting to get disillusioned with if he thought, if the band don't trust me after all these years that I know what's best for us, then I'm outta here.

00:04:22 - So I think that was one of the things.

00:04:24 - And I know that Richie now does a beautifully accomplished version with his lovely lady wife Candice in Black Moor's Night.

00:04:33 - So the song stayed alive for over 40 years in my acapella performances at every pretty much white snake story.

00:04:40 - I stopped having musical accompaniment after the death of John Lord and John had gone back to joint purple so I would just do it on my own.

00:04:50 - So now of course when we do it live,

00:04:52 - Joel will be playing acoustic guitar and you know, it's going to be all a dry eye in the house, one hopes.

00:05:11 - I'm tired

00:05:26 - I have often told a story

00:05:30 - It's about the way

00:05:34 - I lived a life of a drifter

00:05:37 - Waiting for the day When I take your hand and sing your songs

00:05:44 - And maybe you would say Come lay with me and love me

00:05:51 - And I will choose to stay But I feel I'm growing older

00:06:02 - And the songs that I have sung

00:06:08 - And the way I understand

00:06:11 - Like the sound of a wheel going around

00:06:18 - I guess I'll always be a soldier of fortune

00:06:32 - Many times I've been driving on low for something new

00:07:01 - In days of old and nights of cold I wandered without you

00:07:09 - Those days are far in my eyes And seeing you're standing near

00:07:16 - The blindness is confusing It shows that you're not here

00:07:24 - I feel I'm growing older

00:07:32 - And some that I have stung

00:07:36 - Echo and pistols

00:07:39 - Like the sound of a wind will go out now

00:07:47 - Guess I'll always be a soldier for two

00:07:54 - I could be a sound of a windmill going round

00:08:03 - Cause I'll always be a soldier of fortune

00:08:10 - Cause I'll always be a soldier of fortune you
