00:03:25 - But the guest of choice was Glenn Q's who influenced the album with his incredible voice in his rock and blues ensemble.
00:03:36 - The album was recorded in 1987, under the Warner Brothers label, and under the influence of the directors of this company The album included the name Black Sabbath.

00:05:24 - As a film actor, I Am Me faced a woman betrayed, out of love, performing a performance that today must be ashamed and must want to forget. A sleepy soft rock track in the same vein of a powerful white snake ballad, but again, it's Hughes who makes the difference between this recording and the many hundreds of a rock albums that they tainted in the mid-1980s.

00:06:31 - Warner Brothers and various people from Phonogram and stuff about the project and they were excited about it and it was a day I'm lost into my costume a president of
00:06:45 - Warren Brothers Sun who suggested that we should still carry on as Black Sabbath and use this album as a Black Sabbath album. Yeah that's right we did go in knowing that really thought well we knew Glenn's reputation as far as not being very reliable so we thought well let's give him a try and really see if he can cut it, and he seemed like he really wanted to do it, and he could cut it.
00:07:12 - Of course, as soon as we'd done the album, fine, we had a few problems.
00:07:16 - Yeah, he sings very well on the record. We should say that.
00:07:18 - And he is an excellent vocalist, but as soon as he got to touring situation, he just couldn't handle it at all.
00:07:25 - He took him out on the road in America, and what exactly happened?
00:07:27 - Yeah. Well, we took him out into the first week of the tour, first 10 days or whatever it was.
00:07:31 - Glenn was just in bits. He was vocals. He just couldn't sing. In fact, Jeff Nichols had a takeover on vocals while Glenn was standing there really.
00:07:42 - He just couldn't get any words out at all and we sent him to different doctors and we had doctors come into the shows.
00:07:51 - We sent him to psychiatrists. You name it, we sent him there.
and basically it seemed like he'd got such a fright, he was so frightened.00:08:00 - I don't think he'd been on stage in that scale since Deep Purple, since 19...
00:08:05 - No, he hasn't really toured since those days, I don't think so seriously.
00:08:08 - So that was probably the last time he went on stage, in the big, big stage.
00:08:14 - But Glenn is also known to have problems with things like drinking drugs, like bill Ward.
00:08:18 - Those sort of things affect his performance, do you think, on the road?
00:08:21 - I think so, yes.
00:08:23 - Was it possible to keep him away from drinking drugs?
00:08:25 - No, I don't think he could keep anybody away from anything if they really wanted to do it.
00:08:29 - We put a 24-hour bodyguard with him to watch him 24 hours.
00:08:32 - And this guy slept in the next room, got into joining rooms.
00:08:38 - We put things on his door, so if he'd come out of his door, we'd know he's gone out, just to make sure he's okay, you know?
00:08:43 - Because he did have a habit of just disappearing and, you know, he'd come back.
00:08:47 - Would you say that Glenn Hughes has now cost you a lot of money because he's no longer in the band?
00:08:50 - I would say it's probably cost us about 300,000 or 400,000.
00:08:54 - Well, you've now got a new singer in the band, a guy called Ray Gillan, who's an American.
00:08:57 - Where did you find him from?
00:08:59 - America.
00:09:00 - From New York, as a matter of fact.
00:09:04 - When we were in rehearsal stages, just before we went on this tour, the bass player I got with the band Dave Spitz is from New York as well, and he heard this chap, Ray Gillan, in a club playing there, and he said he's really good.
00:09:19 - And so I had his phone number, and I asked Dave, I said, well, get him a tape of him so I can have a listen.
00:09:25 - And Ray wasn't too pleased, I'm giving us a tape.
00:09:28 - He said he'd sooner come along and sing to us personally.
00:09:31 - So that's as far as it went, so I said, no.
00:09:33 - And he got so on the road and we were doing the tour that when we realized Glenn couldn't do it anymore,
00:09:39 - I said to Dave, give us that phone number and I got the manager to call Ray and arrange to see him in New York when we were playing in New York to see him in a hotel there.
00:09:49 - So I met him at the hotel and everything seems to go, he seemed a nice chap and you know, he just seemed to know what he was talking about.
00:09:59 - And so I arranged for him the next two days to come along to the show.
00:10:03 - He came to the show on the evening in New York and he came to the next two dates with us.
00:10:11 - Glenn went separately in a car with his bodyguards.
00:10:13 - Was Glenn used to wear this guy and was hanging him out?
because we sent Glenn separately in a car with the bodyguard.00:10:18 - And so the chap travelled on the bus with everybody else and got familiarised with the songs as we went on.
00:10:26 - And we got to rehearsals to the show and then had a sound check in the afternoon and tried him and tried a couple of numbers on the afternoon, he was good.
00:10:34 - I think everybody at the show must have been thinking, what's going on here, all the crews and all the, you know, the other band must have been thinking, what's happening, they're seeing it up there, yeah.
00:10:43 - Well, we'll be able to find out for ourselves
00:10:45 - That's what it is like fairly shortly because you're now poised to begin a European tour.
00:10:48 - That's right.
00:10:49 - Can you tell us which countries you're going to be visiting?
00:10:52 - Yeah, we'll be doing start-off in Belgium.
00:10:55 - And then we'll be doing Paris and Germany, Switzerland, or Sweden.
00:11:03 - Italy, two days in Italy and back to Germany.
00:11:07 - And then that's it. It's only about eight to ten days.
00:11:09 - What sort of a stage show are you going to be taking out with you at the moment?
trying to take out a very similar one to America but it's just trying to cut it down at the moment to fit in these halls. Is it true that you have a human sacrifice on stage? Not as far as I know unless there's any going to volunteer. I thought it might be the return of Glenn Hughes to the band or something. Well it could be if he turned up.00:11:27 - No. You've got things like lasers, heavy stuff. We've got lasers and stuff. Yeah basically the set is on one side it's like an industrial setting with all chimneys and smoke coming out and stuff and you cross a bridge at the back by the drum riser and it comes to like a time machine affair where there's a spinning lasers and they go into a time tunnel and that's the idea of the audience presents the old stuff into the new stuff from the old to the new and using laser curtains and various I mean not too much effects really we don't want to overdo it with the smoke and bombs all that stuff you know we've done away with that now. So always it is his lights and lasers basically and just a bit of other little odds and ends. Okay well finally Tony you're the only original member of Black Sabbath stood in the band. Do you still think it's fair to keep the name going?
00:12:16 - Is it still the band that it was and that the fans would remember it as being?
00:12:21 - Well perhaps the newer fans might do now but I mean obviously people are going to always say that anyway. It's always going to be some you don't please mate but I've been in in the band ever since day one and I just believe there has to be a black
00:12:36 - Sabbath here. In my life it certainly does and the band at the moment are playing really excellent. In fact it reminds me of when we first started before when everybody's enthusiastic. So it's really good.
