00:02:07 - Heaven and Hell is the ninth Black Sabbath album released in April 1980.
00:02:12 - Almost 42 years on, this album is the first with Rock's greatest vocalist, Ronnie James
00:02:17 - Dio and the first with producer Martin Birch.
00:02:20 - With this album, the musical direction of Sabbath changes, it becomes a heavy metal band adapted to the 80s.
00:02:27 - Heaven and Hell became one of Black Sabbath's best-selling albums after the crisis it had suffered with the firing of their previous vocalist, Ozzy Osbourne.
00:02:36 - For the recording of this album, Jeff Nichols was brought in as bass player, as Butler had been threatening to leave the band and did not participate in the writing and rehearsal sessions for the album.
00:02:46 - When Butler decided to stay in the band, Nichols switched to playing keyboards, a position he would hold in the group's concerts for 20 years, also in the Tony Martin era.
00:02:56 - In reference to Dio joining the band I and Me recalls.
00:03:00 - We had him come to our house in Beverly Hills and I put a riff on it and he
00:03:03 - He started singing and we were like, damn, this is fantastic.
00:03:07 - IOMI said, in a 2006 interview for a story about Sabbath, we didn't audition it, as such, we just started writing.
00:03:16 - It was a different way of working for me, which was very refreshing.
00:03:20 - Always, before with Ozzy, it was about riffs, and Ozzy would sometimes sing the riff.
with Ronnie, there were more chords than one note riffs.00:03:34 - During an interview for BH1's Heavy, the story of Metal, Black Sabbath vocalist Ronnie James
00:03:39 - Dio stated that the song is about the ability of each human being to choose between doing good and doing evil, essentially that each person he has, heaven and hell, within himself.
00:03:50 - This is a nice theory, very current, that says that our world is formed, with the the fusion of opposites, the duality of everything and nothing, of life and death.
00:03:59 - There is no such thing as good and bad, there is the integration of the poles, the balance of that relationship.
00:04:05 - Dio said that it was one of his favorite songs, telling us details of the recording of the album.
00:04:11 - And then Tony said would you like to see the studio and I said yeah sure I'd love to and so went out into the studio and he summarily strapped his guitar on and said oh can I play you something and I said certainly and so he played something
00:04:22 - He said, do you think you can do anything with this?
00:04:25 - And I said, if you give me a few minutes, I probably could.
00:04:27 - So I took it into the corner and came back.
00:04:29 - And we finished almost all of the song that was the first we wrote called Children of the Sea.
00:04:34 - And he said, I want to play with you.
00:04:38 - And he said, so I want you to be in a band.
00:04:40 - And I said, well, I've got other things
00:04:42 - I'm doing at the moment.
00:04:43 - I had two different projects I was doing at that time.
00:04:46 - One was one that would have ended up being another version of Elf, really, because I was working with my friends from Elf at that time.
00:04:56 - And another was with another legend, a guy named Al Cooper.
00:04:59 - Al Cooper, who was the founder of Blood, Sweat, and Tears, produced them, just did great work with a super group with the guitar player.
00:05:11 - Of course, Mike Bloomfield, of course, himself soon we forget but he was he was a legend himself and so I was doing it was he Jeff Skunk Baxter the guitar player Richie Hayward was the drummer a little feat a band that I mentioned earlier on this one so I mean just great players at every position and so now I'm torn between what am I going to do and I had to think about it for a little while and thought to myself well doing with Al is going to mean getting into a little bit more of a progressive mode and I
00:05:43 - I don't think I really want to do that, and playing with Sabbath was certainly going to be what I did more than what Al was doing, so my decision was to do it with Tony and Geyser and Bill, the ward at the time.
00:05:59 - And so after I said yes, everything fell apart again, and suddenly making of Heaven and
00:06:04 - Hell became this incredible chore, a lot of political problems, a lot of managerial problems which I shouldn't go into.
00:06:11 - We started in Los Angeles, went to Florida to finish the project, to record it there, actually did the very last track in Paris, took us quite close to two years to do it all because of all the problems.
00:06:23 - But it was a joy, that's why it will always be my favorite album because of the obstacles put in front of us and because of the obstacles that we conquered and certainly what a great piece of music it was and the inclusion of Martin Birch who was Purple's producer for years and years and years and a man that I got to know through Deep Purple and who consented to do the album and it became, you know, that combination just became a magnificent one.
00:07:08 - Sing me a song, you're a singer Do me a wrong, you're a bringer of evil
00:07:32 - The devil is never a maker
00:07:38 - The less that you give, you're a taker
00:07:43 - So it's on and on and on
00:07:47 - It's heaven and hell
00:07:51 - Oh well
00:08:02 - The lover of life's not a sinner The ending is just a beginner
00:08:16 - The closer you get to the meaning The sooner you know that you're dreaming
00:08:26 - So it's on and on and on
00:08:32 - Oh, it's on and on and on
00:08:37 - It goes on and on and on
00:08:42 - And right in the head I know
00:08:46 - I know I can tell
00:08:51 - Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
00:09:21 - Well, if it seems to be real, it's illusion
00:09:41 - For every moment of truth there's confusion in life
00:09:47 - Love can be seen as the answer But nobody breathes for the dancer
00:09:57 - And it is only love, only love, only love
00:10:17 - I can't wait to see you again

00:11:51 - And when you walk in golden halls
00:11:54 - You get the keys to the front
00:11:56 - You're staring at hell
00:11:58 - Oh no
00:12:04 - We've got to flee for the dead son
00:12:07 - Oh!
