00:00:00 - Her name is Maria Luiz Nero-Riquez-Garduño, or as I call her, Malo. She was born August 19, 1947. She used to live in a house made of adobe around. There was a lot of vegetation, such as trees, flowers, plants, etc. Taking advantage of the environment, they survived planting different seeds as well as selling their products. She looked up to her mom because she had a strong character but due to us at town with a considerable distance from the city, there was a lot of sexism which led to her mom being submissive and obeying her husband without a complaint. Her parents were an alphabet and humble people which made it difficult to try getting ahead 9 children. Every 12th of December her family and her would go to church to light fireworks and take mañanitas to la Virgen de Guadalupe.

00:01:05 - In general, women's life was tough, but in that town they had limited options.

00:01:12 - They probably had trade to choose from, such as be a wife house, be a day lab, or go to the city.

00:01:20 - Most of them, if not 90% of the women, wouldn't finish elementary school.

00:01:31 - My grandma studied until 3rd grade of elementary school, however she managed to have an opportunity and moved to the city.

00:01:39 - She found a job in a bakery and she got married to my grandfather Mario.

00:01:43 - Both of them were in a difficult situation due to neither of them having a good economy made up getting ahead six children, but after all, in my part of view, she made a great job and made a really big effort working six days a week doing double shifts because otherwise, money wouldn't be enough.

00:02:04 - She also did that, so her children would be able to study and not worry about bringing money to the house.

00:02:13 - Although her dream was to study medicine and knowing that dream was gonna be impossible,

00:02:19 - She doesn't regret anything.

00:02:23 - The only thing she would change are the lack of opportunities she was given.

00:02:29 - She is happy that now women on the town she is from have way more options nowadays.

00:02:36 - More women are finishing their career or reaching their goals.

00:02:43 - This strong, honest, hard worker and kind woman took care of me for six years, approximately, maybe more.

00:02:52 - She made me the person I am.

00:02:54 - She taught me how to be perseverant, how not to give up, even if you think everything is against you.

00:03:01 - How to prove people wrong, to always have my head up, not to be conformist, and always look above and vision my goals. Also she taught me to always be honest no matter what and treat well people even if you don't get a life with them. I'm proud to be her grandchild.
